Ph.D. student in comparative genomics,Marburg,Germany

At the Department of Biology, Institute of cell biology, for a period of 3 years (December 1st 2012 to November 30th 2015, with optional prolongation) a position as a Ph.D. student in comparative genomics (drylab) is available. Salary and benefits are according to a public service position in Germany (TV-H E 13, 50%; optional 65% depending on vacancy).

The position is to be staffed temporary and will offer the possibility of further scientific qualification in the frame of the assigned duties. The Rensing lab (http://plantco.de, professorship for cell biology at the University of Marburg) is a joint wetlab/drylab group interested in the evolution of plants in the wide sense (including algae). Our main organism is the model moss Physcomitrella patens, our main theme is comparative genomics. We are looking for a Ph.D. student with drylab background.
The position requires an M.Sc. or equivalent in bioinformatics, computer science or biology (bioinformatics skills are mandatory), fluency in English, ability to interact with wetlab researchers, good communication skills and interest in academic research. Programming skills in Perl or Python are expected, as well as skillful command line use and R or Matlab experience. Good IT/sysadmin skills, knowledge of statistics, experience with databases, Gbrowse and handling of high throughput sequencing data, as well as fluency in German are helpful. The successful candidate will work on comparative genomics, phylogenomics and epigenomics of P. patens and other plants and algae. The work will encompass the analysis of high through-put RNA, DNA and ChIP sequencing data, as well as machine learning/predictive approaches, phylogenetic methods and data visualization.

PhD The impact of GH and IGF-1 on Insulin Sensitivity and Glucose Metabolism

In project 8 a scholarship is available. The Impact of GH and IGF-1 on Insulin Sensitivity and Glucose Metabolism and possible therapeutic application of GH/IGF-1 in different models of insulin resistance.

Methoden:
In vitro and invo models and state of the art methods in molecular biology for ex. eloctrophoresis,diff. assay techniques, PCR cloning, western blot, FPLC,  KIRA.

The research training position is open for students under 28 years of age with an excellent study record and a Diploma or Master's degree (or equivalent) in biology, biochemistry, cell biology, molecular biology, chemical biology, molecular medicine, etc. The applicant should have strong interest and previous knowledge in developmental biomedicine. An expertise in molecular epigenetics or epidemiology is welcome. The PhD scholarship can be awarded for a period of 2 years, with the possibility of extension.

PhD / Postdoc- Knowledge-based Multispectral Tissue Analysis ,Heidelberg,Germany

Medical imaging technology will be combined with approaches from
pattern recognition and classification for data analysis. The aim of
the project „Knowledge-based Multispectral Tissue Analysis“ is the
computer-assisted assessment of tissue properties and risk factors
under consideration of relevant medical data and different imaging
techniques. A knowledge base of past cases will be employed for
improving and objectifying the interpretation of different sources of
information with respect to diagnosis, prognosis, therapy planning,
and follow-up examination.
