The Research Station Agroscope Reckenholz-Tänikon ART conducts research for an environmental friendly, competitive agriculture. We combine ecology, economy and agricultural technology in an integrated research approach and develop science based decision support for farmers, government authorities and society. A Ph.D. student position is available in the research group “molecular ecology”.
Position
Bacterial wilt caused by Xanthomonas translucens pv. graminis is a severe disease of forage grasses. Detailed knowledge on the host-pathogen interaction is a prerequisite for the development of novel breeding tools for the improvement of disease resistance. You will concentrate on the molecular genetic characterization of host resistance by means of comparative genomics, candidate gene charaterisation, single nucleotide polymorphism screening and gene expression profiling. In close collaboration with another PhD student focusing on pathogen virulence, you will investigate the interaction of host resistance genes and pathogen virulence factors. Tasks include bioinformatic and statistical analyses, molecular genetic analyses, greenhouse and growth chamber experiments, data analysis and interpretation as well as presentation and publication of results.
Requirements
We are seeking a highly motivated, team-oriented candidate with a strong interest in molecular plant breeding and plant pathology. Applicants should hold a master level degree in biology, agronomy, or environmental sciences with excellent grades. Affinity for computer and laboratory work is essential and experience in applied molecular biology and genomics would ideally complement your curriculum.
Teamwork in the group and with international partners requires good knowledge of the English and German language.
Conditions
The duration of the position is three years with a salary according to the guidelines of the Swiss National Science Foundation. You will be based at the Swiss Federal Research Station Agroscope ART at Zurich-Affoltern, Switzerland and enrolled at the University of Zurich. The project will start in January 2012 (negotiable).
